My Story of Zelda Peoples
by Jen Healy
I can honestly say that Zelda Peoples has been THE most important and influential person in my life. She is by far the most amazing woman I’ve ever met- as an individual, a teacher, a spiritual master, and a mother figure to me. I have had the privilege of massaging Zelda on a regular basis since moving here to SF in 1998. She happens to be my first land lady, as I lived on Church St. for several years when I came here. That makes Zelda my oldest and dearest client, both in years and age! My regular visits with her that I enjoyed so much I called “Tuesdays with Zelda”.
In these 10+ years of living with Zelda and massaging her, we became very close, more like Mother and Daughter than just close friends. Our familial situations had left us both open and available for this special bond. We often had date nights where we went out to eat, or to see a show, the opera, the ballet, take trips to museums, or enjoy a play. I so looked forward to my time with Zelda, every time!
Most importantly, it was our ongoing conversations about current affairs, relationships, and spirituality that were so dear to me and are in my heart. It is the reason I see her as the most advanced being I’ve ever come into contact with. There are countless stories and conversations I could share that affected me so deeply, I don’t know where to start. I more want to share the essence of her then the treasure chest of wisdom she has left with me. Zelda made me feel like I was loved, accepted, and understood in ways that are rare and I cherish. I have never met anyone with such similar beliefs and ideas to mine, and yet she was 50 years older than me! Not only was she ahead of her time, she was ahead of our times.
We spoke quite often about the spiritual path, the meaning of life, about past-lives, reincarnation, and even about death. I realize now that she was giving me a hint when the last time I saw her (two days before her stroke) she said to me, “I look forward to the exciting adventure that death brings.” I am astonished! Most people don’t even talk about death and dying, let alone call it an exciting adventure! That is why she amazes me, and continues to amaze me.
I feel like everyday, not only is Zelda in my heart and my thoughts, she is everywhere– she is in the wind that blows, the birds that sing, the flowers that grow and the smiles they bring. I call her my superstar angel now, and I feel so blessed to have her on my side in the Spirit realm.
She’s already been offering some miraculous things in her guidance. My dear friend /client, Elizabeth Miller, and I have been inspired to start a wonderful new project in honor of this incredible spirit that she is called (ironically enough) The People’s Project. It is dedicated to celebrating the beauty, life, and wisdom of this amazing soul, and to bring people together in order to celebrate and encourage all of us to find our own “Inner Zelda” through art, music, theater, books, poetry, meditation, healing, movement, and community.
What I will miss most about Zelda is her laugh…she had the sweetest laugh.
SOME OF MY FAVORITE POEMS
Refreshed and Renewed
I awoke this morning– reborn– renewed like spring… And this poem!
All night I felt my infinite source of blossoms bursting with desire, and I knew my potential is
now being actualized!! Finally, transformed from the slumbering possibilities to their
greatest manifestations, as of yet!
Something happens in the company of women.
Souls open like the sun, rising between blue mountains.
All we’ve shared are scattered moments;
Carrot cake, black beans and rice,
Liane Foly, Anais Nin,
Strawberries and cream, the richest of green.
Just a few scattered heres and theres, and yet there’s magic.
The world spins on at warp speed,Above me, below me
Behind me, before me
In spite of me, because of me.
She is there, choosing to be there.
Asking for me.
Her energy is intense.
She is a driving force.
It’s as though a giant,
dark red ribbon has been wrapped around me
And she holds the loose end as I spin.
She helps me to unwind, unlock, unleash.
She supports me, encourages me,
rocks me, calms me.
She helps create me.
Even as the ribbon strips me naked, shakes me,
and opens me to the world, I am safe.
There is magic.
Something happens in the company of women.
Souls open like the sun,
rising between blue mountains.
This Amazing Day
i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth
day of life and love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any-lifted from the no
of all nothing-human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

THAT LIVES IN US
If you put your hands on this oar with me,
they will never harm another, and they will come to find
they hold everything you want.
If you put your hands on this oar with me, they would no longer
lift anything to your
mouth that might wound your precious land –
that sacred earth that is your body.
If you put your soul against this oar with me,
the power that made the universe will enter your sinew
from a source not outside your limbs, but from a holy realm
that lives in us.
Exuberant is existence, time a husk.
When the moment cracks open, ecstasy leaps out and devours space;
love goes mad with the blessings, like my words give.
Why lay yourself on the torturer’s rack of the past and the future?
The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities
will find no rest.
Be kind to yourself, dear – to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.
You will come to see that all evolves us.
The Hidden Singer
The gods are less for their love of praise.
Above and below them all is a spirit that needs nothing
but its own wholeness, its health and ours.
It has made all things by dividing itself.
It will be whole again.
To its joy we come together —
the seer and the seen, the eater and the eaten,
the lover and the loved.
In our joining it knows itself. It is with us then,
not as the gods whose names crest in unearthly fire,
but as a little bird hidden in the leaves
who sings quietly and waits, and sings.
Where Dolphins Dance
The work starts
As soon as you open your eyes in the
Hopefully you got
Some good rest last night.
Why go into the city or the fields
Without first kissing
Who always stands at your door?
It takes only a second.
Habits are human nature -
Why not create some that will mint
Your arms are violin bows
I have become very conscious upon
Whom we all play.
Thus my eyes have filled with warm
Soft oceans of divine music.
Where jeweled dolphins dance
Then leap into this

This is My Heart
This is my heart. It is a good heart.
Bones and a membrane of mist and fire
are the woven cover.
When we make love in the flower world
my heart is close enough to sing
to yours in a language that has no use
for clumsy human words.
My head is a good head, but it is a hard head
and it whirs inside with a swarm of worries.
What is the source of this singing, it asks
and if there is a source why can’t I see it
right here, right now
as real as these hands hammering
the world together
with nails and sinew?
This is my soul. It is a good soul.
It tells me, “come here forgetful one.”
And we sit together with a lilt of small winds
who rattle the scrub oak.
We cook a little something
to eat: a rabbit, some sofkey
then a sip of something sweet
This is my song. It is a good song.
It walked forever the border of fire and water
climbed ribs of desire to my lips to sing to you.
Its new wings quiver with
Come lie next to me, says my heart.
Put your head here.
It is a good thing, says my soul.
